Tamil Nadu minister’s ‘Gujarat drug capital’ jab at Governor’s criticism

Tamil Nadu minister S Regupathy dubbed Gujarat the “drug capital” after Governor RN Ravi claimed that the ruling DMK government had failed to control the infiltration of synthetic drugs and that the Tamil Nadu police were not able to seize the drugs.
In a statement, the minister condemned Ravi for making such statements without knowing the facts. He questioned why Governor Ravi did not raise concerns about Gujarat, which, according to Regupathy, has become a hub for drug-related activities.
“Three years down the line I’ve come across a lot of news of plenty of seizures of ganja. How come central agencies are able to seize hundreds of kilos of synthetic and chemical drugs whereas our state agencies are not able to seize even I gram!” Governor Ravi questioned.
Regupathy questioned whether the Governor had the moral authority to criticise the state government since he had withheld permission for over a year to register drug-related cases against former AIADMK ministers.
“Why isn’t the governor not speaking about the BJP men involved in drug-related cases across India? Why is he speaking about the drug capital Gujarat?” Regupathy questioned.
He further claimed that a policy against drugs was launched in the state only after the DMK government led by Chief Minister MK Stalin came to power.
Regupathy said that 10,256 cases were filed against 14,770 people in 2023 and accused Governor Ravi of speaking on the issue of drugs without being aware of such figures.
“For the year 2023, 10,256 cases were filed against 14,770 people, 23,364 kilos of ganja, 0.953 kilo of heroin, 39,910 pills, 1,230 kilos of ganja chocolate and other drug varieties, including methamphetamine were seized. Until August of this year, 9,750 accused were arrested, 6,053 cases have been registered, 15,092 kilos of ganja, 90,833 pills, 93 kilos of methamphetamine and other drug varieties have been seized,” Tamil Nadu Law Minister S Regupathy stated.
